I got one from mininova and it popped up a message that I needed to download
a codec. I actually did my research though, and that codec is actually a
virus. The only reason I suspected is because I've never seen a file ask for
a codec before. If it didn't play, I just had to go find what codec was
needed...usually using the program G-spot.

I got one from mininova and it popped up a message that I needed to
download a codec. I actually did my research though, and that codec is
actually a virus. The only reason I suspected is because I've never seen a
file ask for a codec before. If it didn't play, I just had to go find what
codec was needed...usually using the program G-spot.

A codec is NOT a virus.

There are files that ask for you to download a specific player. You play the
file and all you get it an onscreen message asking you to visit a site and
download. This IS malware. If you get these files, then delete them.

If you try to play a divx or xvid file in WMP, it will fail and ask for a
codec. divx and xvid are codecs. You need these installed to play on WMP.
Find the relevent site and install the codec. Then WMP will play the file.

However, avoid all that and use VLC. It basically plays everything, bar
those files mensioned above.

This si why sites like TVrss are great. The files are reliable, zero fakes.
Go to mininova and the like, and its pot luck. I only use those as a last
resort. You need experience and luck to filter the rubbish.

Thanks so much guys, with my only using two main torrent sites over the past
few years I've kinda ignored most of the others out there and with them shut
down I can't find anything anymore.

little blue checkmark indicate they have been verified.

Those AVI file that require a special viewers are all virus or malware. The files are
actually videos that have a special header.Once stripped away, it is not the video

I gave it a try with a "healthy meter" on a couple of downloads and
ended up with SIX VERY nasty trojans!

Their "health meter" is a crock!!!!
